Marvellous art book

[[VIDEOID:mo1KL1OT4EA2U93]]The Art of Last of Us is a wonderful art book to Naughty Dog's latest game. I also have the Uncharted 2 art book and I love that book. I love this one too.

This book is packed with character designs and environment art. The concept art is top notch.

All the characters and infected are drawn out in detail and colour. There are various designs for each character. Lots to see. The infected, if you have not played the game, are not traditional zombies. They have been infected by some deadly fungus that grows and consumes the human body. You get to see some interesting and scary designs that you would not get from typical zombies.

The environment art are painted with astonishing amount of detail that makes everything seem so real. There are the devastated towns, rundown buildings, deserted streets and ransacked rooms. Most scenes depicted will make you wonder what the hell happened there. The level of realism you see here is unmatched even by big budget movie sets.

Spoilers appear in the book either as text or pictures. So definitely play the game first before going through the book. Other than that, there's not much text except the occasional comments on the art and game.

This is a fantastic video game art book. Highly recommended.

Everything you need, perhaps too much?

Don't get me wrong, the art in this game is massive and detailed, and I love reading (and seeing) production sketches, and whatnot, and for the price listed here, a VERY good deal, and companion with the game (which is incredible.)

The only thing is, there ARE spoilers in the book, so either read after the game, or stop when you see something unfamiliar.

That's about it. If you're impressed with the game, this is a very good bargain for your money, and enjoyable.

Just keep in mind : This book is NOT a strategy guide, but it DOES have spoilers.

Lots of great character art expecially the infected part

The Art of The Last of Us by Dark Horse Books is a must for any Last of Us fan. The book is 176 pages and they load the pages with art so there's little wasted space. With this book you will get many variations of the characters and environments. Although with the characters I found that almost every single one is a frontal pose of a character with variations in clothing, the face, or something like that. This is not bad since their are a lot of them and they cover a lot of characters but I wish there were more angles and such, but none the less its still amazing.

The Book is divided into 7 chapters.
1. The Introduction is 2 pages and just talks about the creators making the game and stuff.
2. Joel and Ellie is 16 pages and has lots of different poses and variations of the two. There is commentary by the artists about what went through their minds when making the sketches and such which really lets you understand what they were thinking when they made the characters. Also they have pictures of how they were going to have Ellie look but switched to how she actually does look so that was cool to see how they first wanted her to look.
3.The Journey is 93 pages and has sketches and pictures of a bunch of characters and scenes that you encounter throughout the game. There's soldiers, thugs, some of the other main characters, and plenty of abandoned house and buildings. Their is lots of content here and the pages are jam packed. The concept art of the environments are really detailed and have excellent lighting.
4. The Infected is 29 pages and has lots of the different infected monsters. The pictures put you up close and personal to the infected and lets you see all the grossest features. From the bumps, blood, scars, and everything else they made sure to show just how ugly/scary the infected are. This chapter was really cool to look at and highly detailed.
5. The World is 6 pages and has really nothing to it except some signs and weapons which were not really all that great or detailed. There's bows, garden tools, guns, and pieces of metal for the weapons shown.
6. Marketing is 14 pages and has the art they used to promote the game and its basically just some concept art like what they have on the cover of the game and such.
7. The American Dream is 5 pages and is art from the comic book so if you like comic books you might enjoy this section since its just simple drawings comic book style.

Overall this book is a must for any fan of the game. It has lots of character variations and artist comments which really help you know just what went through their minds when making the characters and such. The environmental art is awesome and highly detailed with excellent lighting and color. The scenes show everything from old farms, run down cities, or even the quarantine zone. The infected look gruesome and lifelike and its really gross the amount of detail they put in some of the pictures, but that is what makes this book so good. Finally if your looking for some good character art this book has loads of it and although its mostly all frontal view it still is quite nice to look at and has many variations and characters. I highly recommend this art book and found it to be one of the better game art books.

Successful application of data warehousing expertise to a real-world platform

I've enthusiastically referenced Kimball publications for business intelligence projects over the years; everything from how to manage history in slowly changing dimensions to fact-less fact tables to creating an initial data warehouse project plan, always with outstanding results. Mundy, Thornthwaite, and Kimball achieve two key milestones with The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit. First, they successfully apply many years of data warehousing scholarship and expertise to a real-world platform. This is accomplished from a practical perspective with respect to MS SQL Server, as the authors are realistic of both the strengths and weaknesses of the platform and tailor their approach accordingly. Second, this publication recognizes modern incarnations of the MS SQL Server as a viable platform for data warehousing. Microsoft has addressed the stability issues associated with earlier releases of the SQL Server. If you're considering an MS SQL warehouse deployment, I would strongly encourage you and your staff to read this book.

A political discourse on data warehouses

If you have "green fields" where you're in charge of building a new data warehouse from the ground up, months to develop it, love daily meetings to discuss direction, creating presentations and charts, and selling a data warehouse to sceptical business owners , then this is your book. If you've inherited a data warehouse, then you'll quickly lose patience for the few gems scattered over hundreds of pages.

a must have for implementing data warehouse using SQL 2008 R2

I don't do much review on books until this.

First off, SQL 2008 R2 introduces many new cool features that drastically change the performance and manageability of an Enterprise Data Warehouse. This book has all the tips to jump start to build one. It even has all the tips I need to integrate with Sharepoint. If I knew that, it would saved me days on googling Sharepoint and collecting only piece meals from different authors.

The books comes with many ready to go scripts that are easy to use and error free. Reader going thru the book one chapter at a time from the beginning will find their knowledge grow rapidly. The example helps me explain to my client what the Data Warehouse will be liked with Kimball's Slowly Changing Dimension and what can get out from Master Data Dictionary.

This book, liked, other Kimball books are easy to read and understand. It covers many implementation specific guides that I think it is a BI bible, or BIble :), to consultants in BI. With there are only a few reviews on it, I think this book is a hidden gem or a hidden secret. :)

I would highly recommend any one get a copy of the Developer Edition of the SQL2008 R2 to get all the benefits from the book. The Developer Edition is only around $70, at the time of writing.

In the Alexander Lectures for 1965-66 at the University of Toronto, Dr. Frye describes the basis of the tragic vision as "being in time," in which death as "the essential event that gives shape and form to life ... defines the individual, and marks him off from the continuity of life that flows indefinitely between the past and the future."

In Dr. Frye's view, three general types can be distinguished in Shakespearean tragedy, the tragedy of order, the tragedy of passion, and the tragedy of isolation, in all of which a pattern of "being in time" shapes the action. In the first type, of which Julius caesar, Macbeth, and Hamlet are examples, a strong ruler is killed, replaced by a rebel-figure, and avenged by a nemesis-figure; in the second, represented by Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Troilus and Cressida, authority is split and the hero is destroyed by a conflict between social and personal loyalties; and in the third, Othello, King Lear, and Timon of Athens, the central figure is cut off from his world, largely as a result of his failure to comprehend the dynamics of that world. What all these plays show us, Dr. Frye maintains, is "the impact of heroic energy on the human situation" with the result that the "heroic is normally destroyed ... and the human situation goes on surviving."

Fools of Time will be welcomed not only by many scholars who are familiar with Dr. Frye's keen critical insight but also by undergraduates, graduates, high-school and university teachers who have long valued his work as a means toward a firmer grasp and deeper understanding of English literature.

Good update to the first edition

I read the first edition and looked forward to the release of this edition. About half of the chapters are new or significantly changed. A strength is its breath of topics (from foundations and methodologies to practices and using research to change practice). Occasionally the breadth made me want to read a commentary or syntheses across specific chapters, in addition to the conclusion. For example, consecutive chapters on project-based and problem-based learning did not address their similarities and differences. Also, there are some editorial errors that caught my attention, such as the reference to the early behaviorist "Edwin Thorndike" (his first name is Edward). Overall, this is a good reference and starting point for recent research in education.

The (almost) perfect book on the topic

As a MPH student, I was required to purchase this book. I find it great. All the topics are treated in deep and the author's expertise as a former Public Health Professor gives it a first-hand knowledge on the matter. I have enjoyed the case-studies and the interviews have given me relevant and wise advices for the Public health topic, as well as for my professional life. As a con, I'd love this book to have some pictures like funny cartoons to exemplify some points, because it 'just' has conceptual figures, models, and tables. Anyway, it remains as one of the best texts on the field.

J. M. Hurst in the spotlight

In 2011 the work of J. M. Hurst, considered by many as the father of modern cyclic analysis, enjoyed sudden and renewed interest by the trading community. This translated into several works approaching Hurst's methods from three different angles.

I'll start first with the current book. Just as stated by the author, it will help readers get a better grasp and understanding of Hurst's work, at a fraction of the the cost of his original private course. It will even provide buyers with the relevant code for Tradestation and Updata. This way, if you're tech savvy and already own one of these charting packages, or don't mind the additional investment needed to use them, you will be able to experiment further with the concepts covered in the book. Since it contains the code for all the different cycles, channels and other indicators, the author spares the reader the math details of Hurst's work, which may be for the best, since this has always been one of the stumbling blocks in applying Hurst's methods.

The self-proclaimed goal of the author is to lead the reader to a stage where he can perform his own cyclic analysis. The bottom line is that how well you master Hurst's methods after reading this book, as with so many other things in life and trading, will depend solely on how much work you're willing to put into experimenting with the concepts.

The book ends with a concise summary of the different theories explaining the causes of cycles, which should stimulate even further research into this fascinating subject.

Mr Grafton mentions the Sentient Trader software, by David Hickson, which covers similar ground. The author of that software has, understandably, undertaken a different approach: there is no code sharing, but instead a sleek black box, which generates trading signals based on Hurst's original work.

Good book, but ...

I'm a full-time professional options trader and Hurst's cycle analysis is of great interest to me. I bought the Kindle version of this book on February 3, 2012 and I've been making slow progress through the many complex concepts. The author does a thorough and patient job of explaining and illustrating Hurst's ideas. However, in order to properly evaluate the relevance of cycles, I need to examine the analysis tools in real market situations. In the apendices and throughout the book, Mr. Grafton provides links to code for the tools described in the book. Unfortunately, the website (vectisma.com) where the code resides is in "Maintenace Mode" and can't be accessed. Since I can't get to the code and use the tools on my own charts, I can't really determine the worth of cycle analysis. I would be willing to re-evaluate this book if I can see the analysis tools at work.

The genius of it all... "like a diamond bullet"...

A genius writing to embellish on another genisus' work. If you need this type knowledge, predicting cycles, well if mathmatics can model the particular problem you're resolving , this book is likely to help you find your way there faster. Before digesting too much of this book, I do suggest you get and read the book it's written about "The Profit Magic Of Stock Transaction Timing", although I wouldn't use either by themselves in today's market as people's reactions are not so simple as to be predicted by these algorithms, rather use the knowledge in conjunction with other factors in the market. On the other hand, if there is a physical cycle involved that has no human emotion involved, then this type knowledge could help predict with great accuracy...
