This review of Anders' book appeared in the October, 1997 edition of Choice Magazine: "In the definitive work on electric current ratings of cables, Anders, a research engineer at Ontario Hydro who has worked in this field for more than 20 years, puts together the latest advances in cable technology as well as information from the latest integrated electronic components standards to produce a very technically detailed work on this narrow topic. There are 12 chapters organized in three parts; each chapter has many useful references and is filled with equations and derivations. The basis for all cable ratings is heat production; as such, Anders discusses how the heat is produced and how to calcualte the resulting cable temperature in the first part of the book, "Modeling." The second part, "Evaluation of Parameters," shows how to calculate the electrical and thermal parameters of a cable needed for calculations presented in the first part. The final portion, "Advanced Topics, " covers special situations and numerical methods. This is an updated and more detailed book than B.M. Weedy's Thermal Design of Underground Systems (1988). Near the end of this text, Philip Fogarty SJ asks a question - 'Are priests no more than dinosaurs lumbering their way into extinction in a dying church?' Perhaps it is my imagination, but I have been hearing the correlated reference between religion and dinosaurs, Christianity and dinosaurs, or church and dinosaurs so often lately, that I'm beginning to wonder myself. What is happening in the world today?
There was an intriguing idea floated by a scholar of the Hebrew scriptures, who argued that, as one progressed chronologically through the scriptures, the actual presence of God became less and less; God appeared fewer times, spoke fewer times, even as references to God remained steady, or even increased.
This is not the case today. As Fogarty's title suggests, God seems to be missing. However, the consequent references to God in greater society have not increased to make up for this absence. Is it that we just don't care about God anymore? Is God not so much dead, as irrelevant?
Fogarty explores the attitudes in society today, heavily influenced by science, economics, politics, and psychology. There is a fundamental disconnect between what is being presented in church and what is being presented and held up as valuable and credible in the rest of society.
Even the ideas of miracles, the resurrection, the presence of God in community (at the very least, in the church) seem to have disappeared in modern culture. Even the 'old standby' ideas and preach-able topics of the church are gone. 'What ever happened to hell?' Fogarty asks, with some seriousness, as an example of how the church has re-categorised old ideas, in an attempt to make them more relevant without losing the power or meaning, but somehow missing the mark.
From the earliest time of religion, God existed in community - in fact, one of the intentions of creation, many theologians postulate, is that God desired and desires to be in community with other beings. Fogarty challenges the readers in his final section to look for and develop community, to develop communion with each other. This is not just a task for the laity, the people in the pews, but also for the people in the pulpits and at the altar. Are priests and pastors ready to preach the gospel, and live the gospel, that of love?
Fogarty uses the example of Jesus, saying that Jesus never tried to convert anyone, while recognising the faith that was present in them. This can serve as a model of interfaith and ecumenical dialogue. Fogarty also uses Rahner as a support for developing the idea of priesthood into that of being a community builder, and not simply an administrator of sacraments.
Overall, this book is an intriguing and inspiring look at the church inside and outside. Well-written and engaging, the book has a flow of spirit that invites the reader to address the questions beyond the words of the text. 'Who do you say I am?' Jesus asked. This question is still relevant today, as Fogarty commends to the readers the charge of building communities in which the Kingdom of God can become present.

Harris Kern is no new name to us anymore. He has touched so many people in so many different ways with his wise words through script. I have to say I read and follow Harris Kern as I am a big fan and he truly helped me take myself to the next level. But i have to say that this book is slightly different. It not only mentors you but makes you reflect more on what life is all about. I purchased the book a few weeks ago and once i started reading it i couldnt take it off my hands until i saw the back cover. Well done Harris Kern. You never seize to amaze me. And thank you for inspiring and guiding us. Looking forward to your next book as always.

This book is a good wakeup call

Very insightful and although at first I was skeptical about reading another self-help book, because I have read a few and years later I am still procrastinating and not always motivated to work on my goals. I tried using the author's anecdote by training my mind to live with urgency and it really helped me a lot. I learned quite a bit about holding yourself accountable in the author's previous book, but this one provides more details and is dedicated to helping you get off your butt and making something happen quickly before another ten years fly by and you haven't accomplished anything. This book is a good wakeup call. art

Outstanding, Harris Kern has done it again with his new book "Live Like You Are Dying"! This time he has written a book that is a clarion call to both young and old to get their a**s in gear, because time waits for no one. This book is chuck full of wisdom on how to accomplish more in your life in a shorter period of time, "before it's too late". :-) Throughout the book Harris doesn't hesitate to make all of his successes AND failures available to the reader as examples of what to do and what not to do in fufilling your goals. Harris will coach you all along the way as to what it will take to reach all of your goals, but he won't hold your hand or tolerate any excuses, in fact he covers almost any excuse that you can come up with, he's heard them all. Me, being a senior citizen, (did I just admit that? LOL) I need all of the help that I can get because time IS running out for me, and this book has all that I need to reach all of my goals.

PreS - Grade 1-- Catrina the cat waits impatiently for her owners to vacate the house because her cat friends are coming for lunch. When they arrive, the cats immediately begin to prepare an Italian feast because, "Wednesday is Spaghetti Day ." They cook up a storm and have a wonderful time until the school bus pulls up to the house and deposits the children. Utter pandemonium ensues as Catrina's visitors climb on top of each other, circus style, and leave the house cluttered with the remains of their feast. As the unsuspecting children offer Catrina a bowl of cat food, she strolls off to dream about the next day's feast because, "Thursday is Guacamole Day." The plot is pretty far-fetched, and even the most gullible child may wonder at these cats' enthusiasm for tossed salad, grape juice, and guacamole. However, the concept of a group of neighborhood gourmet cats is amusing. The cartoonlike illustrations are colorful, but nothing distinguishes Catrina and her feline friends from one another except for their coloring. Great bedtime reading

I recently picked up this book for my children, ages 2 and 4, and it has become a favorite bedtime read. I love that it taps my children's excitement for animals and encourages them to think in unusual ways - do cats like spaghetti, for instance? We can use it to reinforce the concept of time as we watch the clock tick closer to 3 o'clock when the children return home and the cats rush to tidy the kitchen. And big words like "spaghetti" and "guacamole" have my 2 year old trying to say new words. It's a good length for a bedtime story - not so long that my younger child looses interest or the story line becomes too complicated, yet there's enough to wonder about that it holds my 4 year old's attention also. It's a great bedtime book!

This book is excellent. It contains all the aid I need for the course and even more. All the topics are well explained and contain more than enough practice problems. The book includes a cd with the digital book, which is great if you carry your laptop to school and you dont want to carry more books. The book includes complete chapters for TI procedures which are great if you are new to this type of calculators. This book is perfect for a math studies ib student.
