A Great Way to Approach Linguistics

First of all, I have the pleasure of being in Dr. Andrews' Principles of Linguistics class. This book is being used as the required text for class and it is simply WONDERFUL. The text is written for students and teachers in such a manner that it is easy to understand and relate to. (Unlike some texts which are written simply for the community of the academic "elite.")
Dr. Andrews takes a wonderful approach to Linguistics, emphasizing the importance of context in any situation to determine what language use is appropriate. Rather than simply telling students that word usage or sentence structure is wrong, this book both analyzes reasons for why these uses may be deemed incorrect and, at the same time, urges teachers to recognize the individuality and expression that can be found in language.
Overall, this book makes studying Linguistics a sheer joy. I can't remember how many teachers pushed correct grammar usage as the primary focus of English classes in high school. This book really tries to step away from that habit and promote a true love of language. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to study Linguistics, teach English, or simply explore the wonders of our own language!

Great Approach to Creating / Managing A Wardrobe

If you are frustrated by the standard quizzes and capsule rules -- pick up this book.

Anuschka lays out a detailed approach to developing your personal wardrobe. She stresses that personal style is very different from being fashionable. She explains when a capsule makes sense, when a "curated" wardrobe makes sense, and how to blend both. Most importantly, she teaches you how to define your own clothing rules. She does not provide lists or pictures of what works together -- that's your homework. She does provide completed samples of each assignment. Do not purchase if you want a quick, do-it-in-one-afternoon guide. It was work; however, I have a clear set of personal rules, fabric preferences, and outfit formulas. Pieces a quick-capsule-approach guided me to discard or pack-away are now in purposeful use!

While Anuschka is exceptional on the wardrobe element, I was only able to follow everything based on previous work. I'd be a bit lost on color, personalized style words, and garment basics without the prior read of Bobbie Thomas, The Power of Style (similar approach with clearer guidance on personal style & color palettes), Nancy Nix-Rice, Looking Good Every Day (required text for FIT NY Image Consultants), and Jennifer Scott, Lessons From Madame Chic (light-hearted stories underscoring and explaining personal style, quality, upkeep, yep, no quizzes her either). For me, understanding the fundamentals allowed me to maximize Anuschka's approach.

Having read those books, Anuschka is exceptional at the final mechanics of building and updating a wardrobe that meets YOUR needs and style personality. Really, no book can do it all. The Curated Closet is the final piece to my personal style & wardrobe journey!

Best wardrobe overhaul method out there!

I've been doing capsule wardrobes and working on editing my closet for the last two years. Here's what I love about The Curated Closet, and why I think it's better than the other wardrobe overhaul methods I've tried:

First of all, none of it is cookie-cutter; it's about what works for YOU. It starts with a look at your current outfits (as opposed to pieces in your wardrobe). She asks you to take pictures of your outfits for two weeks and then looks at your FAVORITE outfits, that you felt the best in, and helps you analyze them to figure out WHY you love them and then build your whole wardrobe around those elements. This is different from every other challenge I've looked at, which have you look at all the clothes you WORE and build your wardrobe around the pieces you wore, which is NOT the same as building it around your favorite outfits. For me, I had a lot of favorite pieces, mixed with filler pieces that I only felt "meh" about, and consequently only felt okay about the outfits, even though they had some of my favorite pieces. No more "meh"!!!

Walking away from this book I am purging a good chunk of my wardrobe (again; I'm down to less than 40 items now) but now have a clear set of guidelines for building it back up. I have a color palette, a couple of go-to outfit formulas, and a very specific but concise shopping list, of what I want to add, in order of priority. I finally feel like I've reached an end-goal and don't need to purge anymore! All that's left is to find the few pieces on my shopping list, and enjoy finally having my ideal wardrobe. Thank you for writing this book Anuschka Reeves, and thank you to Caroline at the Un-Fancy blog for recommending it!!

Helpful, grounded and a delight to read!

A delight to read & very, very helpful.

I started paying attention to my style about 4 years ago... and it was a messy first couple of years. Two years ago, I fell in love with the capsule wardrobe concept. It completely transformed the way I shopped, thought about clothes and got dressed in the morning. Love it! I'm now transitioning into a wardrobe that is less structured and even more awesome -- and this book was so helpful and illuminating.

The things that I especially loved include the styling challenges (it really opened my eyes about what I can do with my closet -- and what I was missing from an accessories standpoint), the tips on how to buy quality (it instantly made me a better shopper) and the detailed information on choosing a color pallet. I'm taking a step away from my historical color pallet this fall and this book made me feel more confident in those choices.

Overall, a delightful read and a sane, resonant voice to guide you through dressing in a way that is more "you" and less everyone else.

Downsides: the styles displayed in the book just didn't resonate with me (I love saturated color... and they seemed to be very summery) -- but it really wasn't an impact.

Simple, Complete and it wirks

The best thing I can say about this book is it is complete. Changed my trading forever - instead of reacting to what the market does, the book shows you how to lay-out a gameplan for the day (with options for each fork in the road). I spent a few days just watching it unfold and what I could see happening based on the pivot/money zone analysis and I felt like nostradamous.

The ONLY critique I have is when he says that a pivot range should be "unusually" wide or narrow he never defines "unusual". Is that 10% wider than average? 200%?

Of all the technical books I've read this one made me feel the best equipped and prepared for trading in the market. However there is one big problem: the first trading strategy he describes is "The moneyzone" created by Nirvana Systems. Which is basically a graph version of the market profile. He uses OmniTrader and VisualTrader Platforms. He even includes the programming codes for these platforms so the platform will find the setups for you.

I read half the book and the strategies sound so amazing I want to try them out. Turn out TOS, TD Ameritrades plaform doesn't include "the money zone" graph setup. I say no problem. I'll get the platforms he uses: OmniTrader or VisualTrader. BIG PROBLEM: They cost $2,000!!! (for the professional version so you can use the programmer codes)

An expensive book, an even more expensive platform required. I would feel slightly scammed but the material in the book really is phenomenal and I believe it really has upped my day trading game. The thing that surprises me most is no other Amazon reviewers mentioned this??? Did they all drop 2 grand on a trading platform????

Its a gem

I almost wanted to give it one star so fewer people would want to buy this book :) Anyway I cant do that - its great that author shared this information with fellow traders. If you are interested in floor pivots, market profile, camarrila pivots - this is a book you must have. Basically you can start trading this system right away and predict markets with pretty good accuracy.

Great story, lousy title and cover.

This is the first time I've read an Amy Star book. It was pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot. The characters and the were bear society were well developed and thought out. The storyline was good. I thought the scene where she gets drunk and becomes 'friends' with the 'bitches' didn't jive with the rest of her keen intelligence and understanding, but she was drunk.

The only major complaints that I have is the title is misleading (he never hires her to marry or mate with him) and the cover is completely WRONG.

Unfortunately I am one of those 'judge a book by its cover' kinda gal, and I was vastly disappointed by the cover. I know it has nothing to do with the book or the writing, but it irritates me greatly to see the cover NOT match the book. In the beginning, the author mentioned the main character was a redhead. Later it was mentioned that her hair was dark. Either case, her hair was not mentioned to be black as the cover shows nor that the main male lead to have such short hair. It was mentioned that he had 'black, shoulder length hair'. I like to get a 'feel' for the book by studying its cover and I felt like along with the picture of the male lead looking too physically 'under-developed' according to the description given of him, the color of the main character's hair and the dark forest background (they're in Las Vegas for crumbs sake!) that this cover is completely wrong. Even the bear is the wrong, what's shown is a grizzly! I feel like whoever picked the cover just massively blew it. I know they spend a lot of time and effort on these types of things and the author has absolutely no control over it. But really! Sunglasses in a dark forest? Grrr!

So boring. Vincent is a billionaire tattoo artist hiding from his responsibility as next clan leader. Snooooooze. Jane is a curvy gal who doesn't blink when she finds out her lover is a bear. Doesn't even ask to see him shift. Seriously, BORING.

I enjoyed the story of The First (reluctant) Son of the ...

A new author for me, however now a new one to follow as well. I enjoyed the story of The First (reluctant) Son of the Bear Clan Leader, Vincent. He had found and succeeded in his art/career, however the responsibility of future leader plagued him. Juggling his business and political life was a trial. Add Jane to the mix, interviewee for personal assistant-manager she turns out to be his mate. Damn, not only was he fighting the need for her, he didn't feel ready--another 50 years and he may be ready.

When you meet your mate, fate doesn't ask you about a convenient time line, or offer one who will just come along for the ride. Not Jane. She is drawn to him, but is nobodies follower. I loved the process of their relationship growth. It wasn't just jump in bed, it happened they are hot, but it took getting to know each other before they made their move.

The relationship between father and son was difficult. Both strong men with different ideas on ruling, neither anxious to listen to other opinions and fast to point out mistakes. So much of the characterization for each person was believable as were the situations.

Not only did Vincent have to learn to juggle his life responsibilities, there was a danger to the clan and eventually to Jane. Read on to discover if he can save both and learn to handle all that his life requires. Can Jane, a mere human, deal with mating a were bear? How does she handle all that her life will require.

This is a page turner with no slow spots. A complete story with build up of characters, situations and danger. A strong recommend.
