Robert Hoekman Jr is a columnist and contributing editor for the revered motorcycle culture and lifestyle magazine Iron & Air. He has authored several books and dozens of articles for a range of publications, including Fast Company magazine's Co.Design blog. He has spoken on design and other topics to packed rooms at events all over the world. Robert's talents for questioning and challenging conventional wisdom have earned him success in a myriad of professional interests, including design, writing, editing, design strategy consulting, and public speaking. He rode motorcycles exclusively for the first nine years he had a license (not bothering with a car until he was 26 years old), and has logged more miles on two wheels than on four. The 2012 Triumph Bonneville he rides today is his only vehicle. He has used it to straighten thousands of bent roads on the way to and through Arizona's quirky and eccentric towns and destinations. Great book.

Good read, but I was hoping for a bit more on the resources used by the builders to actually do the build. There is a lot of info on aesthetics and what they use for inspiration, but I'm looking to better understand the tools they need and how they acquired the skills to do some of the work.

More of a book for bike designers, rather than 'builders' or mechanics.

A well-laid out explanation of custom motorcycle design as it exists in today's culture. However, the book is called "The Build," and that may be somewhat misleading for some customers. The book isn't a tutorial book for building a bike. I think it's more of a book to give you guidelines on what to know if you wish to design a bike. It almost assumes you are already a bit mechanically inclined, because they kind of display and talk about many of the parts and tools you'll need in certain builds, but it doesn't go into specifics about maintenance or anything in that nature.

I'd say this book is more valuable to designers than mechanics, which is fine because that's what I got it for in the first place. Lots of great reference photos, anatomy explanation on various types of custom motorcycle builds, vocab layout and explanation, et cetera. I like the book.

Jumpstarting my new addiction.

I bought this book last week and haven't been able to put it down. It's made my desire to ride turn into a need to get a bike and make it my own. Rob has compiled the right amount of knowledge to get me caught up on the parts and foundation, but even more he talks about the design behind a Motorcycle. This is not only one I'll read again but one I'll flaunt any chance I get.

A must read for biblical skeptics

I was led to this book by a casual visit to the website of New Dawn magazine - an article written by this author was included - it dealt with a refutation of the accepted history of the ancient pyramids and how they were built - ever since my adolescent years when I first became fascinated by Egypt I have suspected the traditional stories presented by historians and archaeologists were based on incomplete knowledge and information - what Will Hart wrote in that piece validated much of what I had come to believe was the truth

Based on that article I had to own this book - it did not disappoint me - Hart goes into great depth in bringing into the light the secret truths hidden in the books of Genesis - having been raised a Catholic, I was taught to believe that some of the things I was being taught must be accepted on faith alone, without questioning their validity - this did not satisfy my desire to know more - years ago, I moved away from my church and embarked on a journey of discovery to find answers to my questions - much of what I have learned over the years has confirmed my belief that I am on the right path - for those of you who might be traveling this same path, I highly recommend this book

A mildly interesting book with some unique premises about how life on earth may have evolved.

Lately I have been reading a few books that promote the idea that we may have evolved from being from outer space. This book (The Genesis Race: our extraterrestrial DNA and the true origins of the species by Will Hart) makes an interesting case for the idea humans may have DNA which came from advanced beings. The author attempts to be objective as he weaves the story of the incomplete Darwin's theory of evolution and how these missing gaps are never explored by main stream scientists. I do think there are numerous unsolved mysteries concerning how humans evolved but suggesting the "creation hypothesis" is going too far in this speculation. To be fair, the author brings up numerous mysteries that science has not solved yet; nevertheless, there is no scientific compelling evidence to convince me to abandon reason, logic and the main stream scientific community for this author's view of the world.

This 250 page text is organized into 23 chapters. Some of the topics covered in this text includes the following:

Making the case for extraterrestrial intervention, reconstructing our ancient past, mysterious origins: descended from Apes? The genesis account, the Sumerians, Egypt: mysteries in the desert, The Indus valley, mysterious civilization, links between ancient Mexico and Peru, clash of civilizations, masters of time and place, the first divine rulers, the evolutionary status Quo, metallurgy, the dating game, ages office, the end times and Cosmic ancestry. This book also has numerous research notes and internet resources at the end of the book.

Clear, concise information on a topic that while controversial, is often dry reading

This book is great and I recommend it as a first read for anyone interested in the subject of possible Alien intervention with early humans here on Earth. The information provided is quite compelling and those with an open mind will find it quite fascinating.

Most of the ancient civilizations that performed impressive feats (pyramids, etc.) all did so during the same time frame. Particular crop staples all appeared across the world at the same time (rice, wheat & corn) with no prior history of those crops to be found. Metallurgy developed at the same time. Interestingly, all old religions from the peoples who had these advanced developments claim they were given to them or taught to them by "the Gods".

What if our idea of a God or Gods is different from what they were calling Gods? Their descriptions indicate these Gods' lived among them and taught them these things. If an advanced culture were to come to Earth and help out the uncivilized natives, what would the perceptions of those natives be of those who came to them "from the sky" to teach them these marvelous things? All very interesting concepts and ideas to consider.

I have several books on this subject, including some of those by Stichin, a linguist who has spent many years interpreting the Sumerian writings. I have a hard time with Stichin's writings and often find myself skipping sections or find my mind wandering. Other authors on the topic often lack credibility or are pushing their own agenda.

This book however, is easy to read, gives just enough info to keep you interested and offers good references for data provided. I think that because the author is a journalist, he was able to analyze the plethora of information, boil it down to the key bits of information that prove a point or perhaps open up an idea that cannot be proved, and write it all in a form that keeps you interest throughout.

My husband who never reads this stuff even read it and found it quite fascinating as well.

I recommend this to all my friends who are open to the idea of another creation story besides the only two currently considered by most Western cultures (A Supreme God Creator or Evolution). One can still read this and keep a sense of spirituality - it just makes you think about it a bit deeper and may skew your original ideas a bit.

For those who've never been able to accept the God or Evolution idea - this is a great book for you. It provides quite convincing information on a very real possibility on how certain things came to be; and why there are so many advanced civilizations from the far past who've accomplished things that don't make sense or that are more advanced than even we can do today (the Mayan calendar, for example...)

About the Author
Michael Melvin is currently Head of Currency Research at Barclays Global Investors. He also retains affiliations at the Arizona State University Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Melvin received his Ph.D. in economics from UCLA in 1980. He has served as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Board and the International Monetary Fund, was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Frankfurt, and has been a visiting professor at UCLA, Northwestern University, U.C. San Diego, and the University of Hawaii. His field of specialization is International Finance, and he is the coeditor of the Journal of International Money and Finance.

My favorite textbook in basic International Economics

I am a university professor who regularly teaches a course in International Economics. After having considered many textbooks (Pugel, Feenstra, Krugman etc.), I decided to adopt this book for my class. I like the book, and I feel that my students like it too. The greatest strength of this book is how "minimal" it is. It is striking how the authors manage to explain the major theoretical concepts in a concise, yet intuitive way. Indeed, most theoretical analyses in this book simply rest on the analyses of the interactions between indifference curves, price line and production possibilities curve and a few other curves. ie., the authors rely much on a "geometric" proof strategy (cf. proofs of HO theorem, Rybcynzki theorem, and Stolper-Samuelson theorem in the appendix of Chapter 4). Naturally, it assumes a simplified assumption that there are two countries and two goods, while the extensions and generalizations are left in the appendices. But the insights from the analyses are lucid, precise, and very readable. The only disadvantage I can see is that it does not contain a lot of exercises for students to practice. But, apart from this point, I believe that this is a very suitable textbook for a first course in International Economics.

Be careful, the paperback version is a study guide

I had to quickly cancel the order. I saw the hardback at >$150 and the paperback at around $40, figured let's go for the paperback. What's not clear is that the "paperback version" is the study guide, not the book itself. Too misleading.

I do not feel this book is a good educational tool

I have recently taken Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. The subject was difficult, but able to be grasped with some study. (I am an adult student)As for the "International Economics" textbook, I feel it is very poor as an educational medium. If you ever really sit and attempt to read this thing, all you are reading are a bunch of letters. There is no sense to the material and very little attempt to clarify anything. It is confusing enough to learn a difficult subject without having to decipher every letter of the alphabet into a different word or variable. I understand brevity is necessary to avoid repetition, but please! This is to be a learning tool. There should at least be some attempt to 'spell out' the information once. I feel this book was a very bad investment on my part, and would never have been my chosen text for this topic. I wouldn't even give it one star, but that was as low as I was able to select.

About the Author
Margaret Ferguson (Ph.D. Yale University) is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California―Davis. She is author of Dido’s Daughters: Literacy, Gender, and Empire in Early Modern England and France (2003) and Trials of Desire: Renaissance Defenses of Poetry (1984). She is coeditor of Feminism in Time, Women, Property, and the Letters of the Law, Literacies in Early Modern England and a critical edition of Elizabeth Cary’s Tragedy of Mariam.

Mary Jo Salter (M.A. Cambridge University) is Emily Dickinson Senior Lecturer in the Humanities at Mount Holyoke College, where she teaches poetry and poetry-writing. She has published several books of poems, including Henry Purcell in Japan (1985), Unfinished Painting (1989), Sunday Skaters (1994), A Kiss in Space (1999), and, most recently, Open Shutters (2003). A vice president of the Poetry Society of America, she has also served as poetry editor of The New Republic.

Jon Stallworthy (M.A. and B.Litt. Oxford) is Senior Research Fellow at Wolfson College of Oxford University, where he is an Emeritus Professor of English Literature. He is also former John Wendell Anderson Professor at Cornell, where he taught after a career at Oxford University Press. His biography of Wilfred Owen won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W. H. Smith Literary Award, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His biography of Louis MacNeice won the Southern Arts Literary Prize. He is also the author of Rounding the Horn: Collected Poems and Singing School: The Making of a Poet, and editor of the definitive edition of Wilfred Owen’s poetry, The Complete Poems and Fragments; The Penguin Book of Love Poetry; The Oxford Book of War Poetry; and coeditor of The Norton Anthology of Poetry. My constant companion

I got this anthology as a gift a few years ago, just after its release, I believe, and it has been with me ever since. This book is one of the few items that I must have with me no matter what my location, whether at college or at home.

Norton anthologies are great. As is the case with the ones I used in college, this book includes both footnotes and glossing in the margins, both of which help immensely when the reader is inexperienced or new to a certain period of literature (Norton is particularly helpful to students new to Spenser). The huge number of poets represented here makes the book indispensable to lovers of poetry.

An Excellent Anthology

Given the fact that the anthology is nearly 2000 pages long, it is quite difficult to quibble over substance in this wonderful anthology. Almost every poet of any significance and their seminal work is represented in the anthology.

There are two quarrels I do have over style. Though the anthology has biographical sketches of the authors, those do not appear with the authors' work but rather at the end. The other thing I would change would be the index. The index is one combined index rather than a spearate index of first lines and authors.

All in all, a great find and great buy.

Published scholarship on horror cinema has increased dramatically in recent years, and now Schlegel provides a readable, informative history of the genre in Spain. As Schlegel observes, the Spanish horror film has been understudied; he seeks to fill that gap with this study, which is the first English-language book on the subject. Taking a contextual approach significantly influenced by Fredric Jameson’s The Political Unconscious: Narrative as a Socially Symbolic Act Schlegel conceives of his project as a ‘cultural history through textual and industrial analysis.’ He fruitfully examines the socioeconomic, political, cultural, and historical contexts in which Spanish horror movies were produced in the ‘boom’ period 1968–1977. Specific topics examined include Francoist censorship, the financing and marketing of Spanish national productions and international co-productions, manifestations of the zombie subgenre in Spain, and the Euro-horror tradition as manifested in several selected films. Nicholas G. Schlegel is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Alfred University. I didn't expect the Spanish...

One of the many strengths of Nick Schlegel’s “Sex, Sadism, Spain, and Cinema: The Spanish Horror Film” (SSS&C hereafter) is that it shows that a book with academic rigor and scholarly design can be written about a popular subject—a subject that is vulgar in the sense of common, widely disseminated or of mass appeal—and still be both thought-provoking and eminently readable. Horror movies are as popular/vulgar/common/fun as anything can be but are also signs that point to larger issues of culture, agency and the subversion of normative social influence. You get both and more in this book.

Schlegel clearly knows his stuff. He has seen all (or if not all, probably 99%) the Spanish horror movies released in the 1968 to 1977 period plus most of them from before 1968--the "Selected Filmography" is long and comprehensive enough to cover the genre. You can tell he has read widely and deeply and mastered the sources but also adds to our understanding of the movies and enjoyment of the book with interviews of some of the important figures of Spanish cinema.

SSS&C isn’t dumbed down for the general reader—it doesn’t need to be. While it is true that the more one knows about movie production and marketing, critical theory and the relationship of popular art forms to social and political structures the more one will take away from the book, it does a good job of describing some of the technical critical and cinematic terms used and does so in the flow of the narrative. And, of course, it is about horror movies which so many of us learned to love and be scared by as children. I think part of the continuing popularity of horror is less the movies themselves but the way we recall the emotional and visceral punch of Frankenstein’s monster awakening, the full moon rising behind a person who can change to a werewolf or the whirr of bat wings as the heroine enters the dark castle.

Horror movies were cheap to make and had a guaranteed audience—which is still true today—but they still had to pass the censors appointed by or in consultation with the Catholic Church, even into the post-Franco period. Spanish director Eugenio Martin discusses this in an interview where he talks about the self-censorship practiced by writers and directors, doing the work of the official overseers by limiting themselves what made it onto the screen. An interesting parallel to film censorship in Falangist Spain is with the People’s Republic of China. Until recently horror movies not allowed to be shown in mainland China, including (or especially) those churned out in such numbers just across the border in Hong Kong. Horror meant the supernatural, the antithesis of materialism, and was simply forbidden by the Communist Party.

Great book. I've always been a sucker for the ...

Great book. I've always been a sucker for the unique Spanish Horror and Exploitation flicks of the 60's and 70's, and this is a well written account of the trials and tribulations the directors, producers, casts, and crews faced while under the reign of General Franco while trying to get their product out into the world. Interesting from beginning to end. I ended up digging up some of these old gems and re-watching with a new appreciation. A little pricey for the size of the book, but this is quality research and writing and really is well worth the price especially if you are a fan of these genre flicks. There aren't too many books I know of that deal exclusively with these films, but this is hands down the best writing on the subject that I have encountered.

An amazing book about Spanish Horror which covers most of the most important films of what it is called The Spanish Horror Golden Age, paying special attention to the social and politic background so the new generations and non expert on the subject fans can understand everything around it. It is a must for die hard fans who can broaden their minds and look deeply and under a new vision into these classic and also an essential work for newbies who has just discovered these flicks.
