About the Author

Molly Monsey joined Tableau in 2009 as a technical product consultant. She and Paul Sochan work together to lead the Tableau training team. Today she recruits, trains, and supports instructors who educate Tableau users all over the world. Paul Sochan joined Tableau in 2010 and serves as the Senior Director of Global Education Services. The training team he built with Molly Monsey develops all Tableau training offerings. Paul has been in the Business Intelligence space since 1994.

Step by step approach to Tableau, great for beginners.

Tableau is gaining popularity as a visualization tool and there have been a spate of books lately. I have purchased 3 other books on Tableau, and most of them address the basics rather than get into complex visualizations as they get rather specific. This book like other Dummies book is very comprehensive. It begins at the beginning and takes you all the way up to doing advanced analytics in Tableau. I would recommend it for beginners but the advanced users may also find it handy to keep around for a tip or two that they may have missed.

If you have a Tableau license in your organization, you will already have access to their regular online classes and workshops and also their data sets on their website. You can use those for getting a primer. There are some pre-recorded classes and some that happen live. I've taken both and found that the pre-recorded ones can be slow and time consuming at the beginning and live ones can sometimes move too fast for you to absorb the steps. So having a book like this handy that takes you over the same stuff and you can learn at your pace, is great. This book is almost laid out like a step by step introduction to Tableau.

The beginning chapters of the book show you how to use Tableau Desktop and how to quickly get up and running using data. It's fairly easy once you get the hang of it and the book shows you how. By Chapter 2 you're already creating dashboards. That can be a great feeling! Chapter 3 illustrates the all important dimensions and measures and the differences between them. These are important concepts and the more you can master them through using different datasets it will really help ground you in how to visualize data. Tableau has a fairly good idea of how to sort through columns and assign dimensions and measures without you having to assign manually, but sometimes you may need to alter something to get the right visualization.

Next comes connecting to data, which can be a greater pain some times, and this book shows some tips and tricks. Things may be more complex in real life given the data structures and data access in your organization, but this book tries to simplify it. It then goes through all the different charts and visualizations. Tableau is fairly intuitive but you can miss some things if not familiar with it. Reading through these subsequent chapters gives a good primer. By Chapter 9 you're learning how to add worksheets. A very important aspect, as I learned it's better to create more worksheet templates than just altering views each time. Chapter 10 is on Dashboards, all important as that is probably the output you will share with the users. Next section takes you through publishing and sharing with other users and rest of the organization.

Once you're down with the basics which can happen in a day or two or at most a week if you're going slowly, you'll want to look at Advanced Analytics where all the fun begins. Chapter 14-16 take you through how to do calculations and create your own calculations for really parsing your data the best way. Tableau site examples can also be very useful at this stage as they have several datasets just designed to learn advanced analytics. The help links given in the book are not working yet, so I cannot say if the Dummies website will offer more resources.

Chapter 17 is about Tableau tips and tricks, some I learned the hard way like saving early and often or discovered later like undo, so it's good to have them listed here. It saves time and frustration later! The last chapter lists resources, some I knew about already like the Tableau classes and courses and conference, but I discovered some other links through this book.

Overall, compared to other books this one is more like a Textbook, same as another book Tableau 9. Some others focus more on different types of data visualization and transforming data. I recommend this one as a through primer for beginners and given it's relatively value price it can be a handy reference for the advanced user - if only to use when they're training others.

Basic primer for creating visualizations, but not for adminstration, support, or installation of the app

Written by employees of Tableau, this book is really good for staying on-topic, having great content, and being concise. That said, this book isn't for everyone, and your real-life experience with Tableau will definitely depend on your circumstances and needs.

This book is written for someone completely new to Tableau, with it leaning toward people completely new to data and data visualization outside of typical Excel types of charts. That's not a bad thing, and if it describes you, this is the perfect book to get you started. If this isn't you, be aware this book is very light on all the enterprise level heavy-hitting questions you might want to know.

The book focuses on the Tableau Desktop interface and uses sample data and simple visualizations to get you started. It takes you step by step through identifying your data source (like an Excel file), importing it, then using it to create everything from simple visualizations (like a bar graph), through to creating multi-visualization dashboard and "stories" (a Tableau term) that can be shared with others.

Where this book stops short is that it doesn't cover any of the installation or maintenance of the application, the associated server software, security controls, etc. Also, while everything looks simple on the surface, and even if you're just going to be an end-user creating visualizations, be aware that it may not all be sunshine and unicorns in the real world. Often the hard part is getting quality data from your company's back-end databases into Tableau itself. That data isn't always optimized for reporting, let alone structured to make Tableau efficient at analyzing it. I could elaborate, but really I just say this to note that all these deeper topics are not found in this book, and they are assumed to by non-issues.

Back to the book, assuming you have good data, you'll be happy to have this at hand when first starting up using Tableau desktop. While it leads you through the whole process and is actually good to read cover-to-cover, it has some helpful nuggets like examples of the various visualization types, menu structures and functions, etc that will serve as good references to flip to. While Tableau touts itself as "Drag and drop" simple, there's actually more than half a dozen to a dozen places to drag and drop things within the interface. Dragging something onto one place vs. another will give you different results and greatly affect your visualizations look or functionality. Without any help or training, that can be very frustrating. This book will help you avoid that going in.

Conclusion - it serves one purpose but does it well, helping the Tableau Desktop user learn the basic functions and features of how to create visualizations using simple data sources. If you need info on how to install, administer or support the application, you'll need to find something else.

A decent book with a few missing pieces

Written by two of the Tableau training team, it's a nice visual walk though getting data into Tableau and displaying it. They explain the specific terminology (e.g. a dashboard in Tableau is combining data visualizations from two templates), and it's easy to follow.

What is missing? If you want to do a map other than the standard geographies (county, state, nation, etc), there is no discussion of how to look at different map geographies. Which version do you need? Tableau public desktop? Publish data to the web using Tableau public? A licensed version of desktop? A license for Tableau online? A license for Tableau server? Having a checklist of which service does what would be an important benefit to have. There's some basic discussion of how to connect to databases, but not an in-depth approach of what is best (when would you want to do an 'extract' vs have a 'live' link (and again, which licenses support it). What if you want to add confidence intervals to charts or to show margins of error around trend lines? Can that be done? Not discussed in this book, but could be important considerations for companies or individuals who are making a choice in which visualization software they might want to invest.

If using Tableau public, all data that are being visualized are available for download. The author's response to that is that you "might want to use caution" rather than being really explicit and saying "don't put out information that you don't want everyone to have." This reader felt like that was a missed opportunity as people might not realize the extent to which their data become available.

That being said, the book instructions are super easy to follow, pictures are well diagrammed, and readers will be able to produce visualizations almost instantly following the instructions. Novices to Tableau will find this of use; experienced users will not.

An exciting introduction to the Maya and conquistadores.

I am a fifth grade teacher from Arlington, Virginia who could not put it down. My class loved it and we found the two sequels, The Feathered Serpent and The Amethyst Ring. They have the hero encountering the Aztecs and the Incas. It is an amazing introduction to the early Central American civilizations. Read all three.

Okay so this was like a really good book. Well actually it was awesome! Its full of lies, shipwrecks, slavery, action, and sacrifice! It even has a hint of romance between the main character and this native girl who teaches him that everyone doesn't have to have the same religion to get along. AAAWWW! How cute!

anyway...this book is really great so read it and be prepared not to be able to put it down. (ahem-watch out the end is kinda gruesome)

Yeah, so like read the sequels other wise you'll be left on a cliffhanger! They are The feathered serpent and the amethyst ring! You'll never forget this book!!! (haha maybe you will...)

wonderfully written!

This book is a rare find that can be useful for a teaching tool. I teach fifth grade and during the year we study about the Mayas. When I found this book I was reluctant to read it. Once I started I could not stop. Scott O'Dell has uniquely woven a great story around a fascinating character. The story includes topics of survival, friendship, slavery and religion. I have also read the sequel to this book, The Feathered Serpent , this was as well an exceptional piece of children's literature.

Proposing solutions, Cuonzo writes, is a natural response to paradoxes. Paradox

I enjoyed reading Paradox even though much of material was above my head. Yet, I learned about subjective probability, the degree to which one believes something and I will use it my classes that I teach to high school students. Also, paradoxes-read about the book to learn about some famous paradoxes- make you pause and think, which provide humans the opportunity to consider other ideas and grow.

Difficult to use as a reference

This book seems to be a good value at $12 for 225 pages. Be advised, however, that it is smaller than standard size at 5 x 7 inches.

The book appears to have a lot of good information. Unfortunately, it has effectively no table of contents --- only 3 chapters listed for the 225 pages. This makes it very difficult to use as a reference --- especially given the unusual structure of the book. I find this flaw to be nearly fatal.

Nevertheless, in view of the low cost for a substantial amount of content, you may find the book worth buying. I recommend checking out a library copy first, as I have done.

Once you begin reading As Nature Made Him, a mesmerizing story of a medical tragedy and its traumatic results, you absolutely won't want to put it down. Following a botched circumcision, a family is convinced to raise their infant son, Bruce, as a girl. They rename the child Brenda and spend the next 14 years trying to transform him into a her. Brenda's childhood reads as one filled with anxiety and loneliness, and her fear and confusion are present on nearly every page concerning her early childhood. Much of her pain is caused by Dr. Money, who is presented as a villainous medical man attempting to coerce an unwilling child to submit to numerous unpleasant treatments.

Reading over interviews and reports of decisions made by this doctor, it's difficult to contain anger at the widespread results of his insistence that natural-born gender can be altered with little more than willpower and hormone treatments. The attempts of his parents, twin brother, and extended family to assist Brenda to be happily female are touching--the sense is overwhelmingly of a family wanting to do "right" while being terribly mislead as to what "right" is for her. As Brenda makes the decision to live life as a male (at age 14), she takes the name David and begins the process of reversing the effects of estrogen treatments. David's ultimately successful life--a solid marriage, honest and close family relationships, and his bravery in making his childhood public--bring an uplifting end to his story. Equally fascinating is the latest segment of the longtime nature/nurture controversy, and the interviews of various psychological researchers and practitioners form a larger framework around David's struggle to live as the gender he was meant to be. --Jill Lightner

Focusing on the real-life story behind sexologist Dr. John Money's famous sexual reassignment case of 1965, Colapinto, an award-winning journalist, has penned a gripping medical melodrama. After Bruce Thiessen, one of two identical male twins, lost his penis during a botched circumcision, he underwent surgery that made him anatomically female, later received estrogen injections and was raised as a girl under Money's supervision at the Psychohormonal Research Unit at Johns Hopkins. All of Money's reports of the case--which quickly appeared in textbooks as a prime example of environment trumping biology--portrayed Bruce (now Brenda) as a well-adjusted girl, although the reality was quite different. Angry, sullen and having always insisted that "she" was a boy, Brenda finally decided at age 15--after "she" finally learned of the surgery-to revert to her original sex and take the name David. Drawing on extensive interviews with the Thiessen family, "Brenda"'s therapists and friends, Colapinto has written a wrenching personal narrative and a scathing indictment of Money's methods and theories, including instances of what Colapinto and David Thiessen see as extraordinarily invasive behavior and sexual abuse in his examinations of "Brenda" and her twin brother. YA-A sorrowful account of a healthy male baby who, after suffering from a botched circumcision, was surgically altered and raised as a girl. Beyond that, it is the story of a psychologist from Johns Hopkins who would not see that the transsexual "remedy" was a grievous error since that admission meant the loss of the fame, power, and acceptance gained from his theories on gender identity. The book is in actuality a reporting of the facts of the case: the medical diagnosis; the surgery; the results; and the terrible effects the gender switch had on Bruce Reimer (soon to be Brenda), her twin, and their parents. By adolescence, despite hormone treatments, Brenda's misery was so complete that a switch back to the gender of birth was inescapable. Thus was David born. The tragedy of this family was compounded by the details of the famous Dr. Money's refusal to accept the failure of this treatment. One is forced to wonder how many other children who are afflicted with genital anomalies, whether from physician error or from a congenital defect, have suffered due to the ongoing nature versus nurture debate of scientists. This is a compelling story that will educate teens about some serious physical, psychological, and scientific issues. Because of interviews on television recently, David Reimer's story may already be familiar to many of them.

Read this book!

Wow. This book may change the way you see the world. It is captivating on several levels at once. First and most important, it is an engrossing real-life exploration of a basic question about our human natures, a question that has to be of fundamental interest to almost anyone: In our essential personalities and drives, are we the product of nature or nurture or some combination of them? The book goes a long way toward a definitive answer to that question in one central aspect of our beings (our sexual identity). Second, it is the utterly absorbing, painful, ultimately triumphant true story of a remarkable individual forced to grow up in a harrowing situation we can all barely imagine but have to wonder about. Third, it is a riveting suspense story, with genuine good guys and bad guys some of whom have had frightening power over people's lives. The book is fast-paced and beautifully written, with the kind of all-to-rare clarity and straightforwardness that can make the most complex matters seem simple by getting right to the heart of them with no nonsense. I read it in one sitting--something I never ever do. I'm going to read it again, there's so much in it.

IT'S NATURE...NOT NURTURE...

This is a wonderfully written book and a fascinating look into the debate of nature versus nurture in the area of gender assignment. Intelligent and insightful, the author draws a compassionate portrait of a family who, faced with a decision in the wake of a tragedy, relies upon the advice of a well-respected doctor, which reliance turned out to be misplaced. The book details the aftermath of the family's fateful decision and the impact it was to have on them all.

In August 1965, Canadians Janet and Ron Reimer gave birth to identical twin boys, whom they named Brian and Bruce. When they were about eight months old, they arranged to have them circumcised due to a medical condition that caused them pain during urination. Circumcision was to remedy the problem. Little did they know that the circumcision for Bruce would be botched, resulting in the loss of his penis.

A plastic surgeon with whom the Reimers had consulted in connection with the catastrophe that had struck Bruce had spoken to a sex researcher who had recommended that they raise Bruce as a girl. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic had suggested that they ought to get a second opinion with regards to that suggestion. The parents then consulted with a doctor affiliated with John Hopkins Hospital, Dr. John Money, a renowned doctor in the area of gender transformation, who had been the driving force behind the then controversial surgical gender re-assignment procedure for which the hospital was becoming known.

In 1967, the distraught parents met with Dr. Money and shortly after, Bruce became Brenda and clinical castration followed. Thus, their child, who genetically and anatomically had been born a boy, was for all extent and purposes now deemed to be a girl. Brian was now on the other side of the gender divide of his identical twin brother, the twin formerly known as Bruce.

Moreover, Dr. Money now had a dream scientific experiment, because he had a set of twins for which the unafflicted twin could act as a control by which to measure the afflicted one. In 1972, Dr. Money disclosed his "twins case" to the medical world, giving a slanted version of the experiment that made it appear to be an unqualified success. Unfortunately, his analysis of the situation did not disclose the difficulties that Brenda was having and her seeming inability to adjust to being a girl.

Apparently, though Brenda had no idea as she was growing up that she had originally been born a boy, she never felt that she was a girl. Years of follow-up visits with Dr. Money for both twins proved to be unsettling for them, as Dr. Money employed somewhat bizarre methods and procedures. Moreover, as Brenda grew older, she would resist additional surgeries and initially resisted the hormone therapy that was introduced on the eve of puberty. Even when confronted with a totally rebellious Brenda, Dr. Money, however, remained in denial about the failure of his experiment. He would continue to tout his treatment of Brenda as an unqualified success.

It was not until March of 1980 that Brenda was finally informed by her father about what had happened to her years ago and what had been decided in light of the circumstances. It was a revelation that was to dramatically change Brenda's life. What followed was a repudiation of Dr. Money's assertions with respect to his treatment. The book details the changes that Brenda was to make in her life, changes that would find her living the life she was originally meant to lead. Brenda would now become David and live the life of a male. Unfortunately, happiness would continue to elude him.

This is a simply wonderful, intimate look at a family that survived a hideous tragedy. It also sympathetically and sensitively details the personal journey of one family through the labyrinthine differences in opinion surrounding the age old debate over nature versus nature. I would certainly assert that nature, and not nurture, controls. This is a very well thought out book on the issue, grounded in the tragic experience of one family. Bravo!

Excellent Read!

A must read for everyone!
John Colapinto has done such a marvelous job in sharing David Reamer's compelling, courageous, and heartbreaking story. The facts are presented without condemnation, (even where they were fairly deserved), for the medical/psychological community involved in this boys life. They are equally presented with the upmost respect to the very hard choice these parents had to make and then live with.
As the reader, you are taken through the very difficult, unimaginable, journey of David's life. In painstaking detail, you are brought to understanding the decisions that were made, due to very misguided medical/psychological advice. The unthinkable...to take an obviously male child, injured in a freak accident, and raise him as a girl. I walked away with such compassion for David's parents and such respects for David Reamer himself. He has shown so much courage, to come forward now, sharing the details of his childhood. His perseverance has made him a champion of the human spirit! I wish I could meet this man, give him a loving hug, and tell him I wish I could have been his friend, when he needed one the most!

A Good Primer

This book explains well the features and uses of this sophisticated camera. Four decades ago, I was a fairly proficient amateur user of an SLR film camera. However, I had gotten away from using sophisticated cameras. I have been using "point and shoots" since then. Recently, I longed to return to good photography, and I bought the Nikon D3300. I have bought two books to help me get into the technology I have bought. This is the better of the two. It explains things basically, and it is designed to allow you to enter any part of the book and understand what you are reading. In other words, I repeats things it has discussed previously, rather than either assuming you read the earlier section or referring you back to it. That may be a bit irritating if you read it straight through, but you can easily skim through the repetition you remember reading.

This book explains the features well and well-describes how to use them to best effect. I recommend it for someone who wants to learn how to use the features of this sophisticated camera. If you are an advanced user, (1) you do not need this book, and (2) you should not buy this entry-level DSLR camera.

i've finally made my sojourn into photography with a purchase of a nikon D3300....knowing that the basic manual for most things are incredibly dry and sometimes hide important info behind jargon or technical writing, i decided to invest in my first "for dummies" book.

this book has been priceless for a beginner and i find myself constantly referencing it for new ways to use my camera. if you're a veteran photographer then i doubt you'd be reading these reviews in the first place....but if you're a beginner or you wish to have a more in depth understanding of what your nikon D3300 can do for you then this book is for you.

Good read to supplement the instructions.

I'm fairly technical by nature and by profession. I know a good image when I see it, the Nikon is capable of good pictures. Therefore, I am obviously the weak link hence "dummies " is for me!

This book is easy to follow and almost fun to use. It has greatly enhanced my abilities as a photographer. Maybe I'll look at other books for dummies, the first step is realizing that I'm one!

Highly recommended!
